Memoirs of a Lunatic

The title almost says it all. I'm a little insane, like all folks, and I'm just putting down what I think about. Maybe some of it is funny, maybe some of it isn't. Just come read and find out for yourself.

American Idol

Man, the girls did NOT bring it tonight. But, I must say that I didn't really 100% agree with the judges tonight.

Sure, Simon was right that Kellie Pickler is helped by her cuteness. But, I thought that Heather Cox did a really good job with Hero, though she was panned by the judges.

Still love my Mandesa (I don't care. She is sexy.) I couldn't stand Brenna at first, but she is growing on me. Not her singing (it is average), but her personality is funny to me. I also find her more attractive every week.

I still like Melissa McGhee, too. She's another one that will probably stay around because she is just so darn good looking. Paris was even a bit disappointing to me tonight, too. And, I love me some Paris. I don't know what it is about her voice, but I thought she was so great during her audition. She needs to not let her greatness slip away. Plus, it is funny to hear my 8 year old daughter mimic her "Thank You".

What did you all think?

Ha, perfect post! I'll post an abbreviated version of the Idol rundown I wrote for my friends earlier this evening...

Tonight was the "Night of the Suck." Happens every single season. I mean what are these people thinking...

"All In Love is Fair?"
"Who's Loving You?"

Simply dreadful.

Now for the rundown:

Katharine was dressed like an aerobics instructor and soundly only slightly better.

Brenna possesses absolutely NO talent to speak of.

What would possess Paris (a contestant I actually LOVE) to sing a song older than time???

I have no affinity for Kellie Pickler at ALL. There is nothing believable about her "fresh off the farm" performance anymore and anything she can do, Carrie did last season.

I love Mandisa and, as usual, have NO idea what the hell Randy was jawing on about.

what series is american idol on now?
over here in the UK, we are kind of getting a bit sick of all that sutff. but it seems to still be goin really strong in the US.

Nicole: I couldn't believe the crap that they were running out there last night. I think that Randy Jackson becomes more a caricature of himself every season.

Maz: Thanks for stopping by and commenting. This is the fifth season of Idol over here and it is showing no signs of slowing.

the fifth really is going strong. the only american idol who made it over to the uk though was kelly clarkson, she has an amazing voice, better than what the UK dished up! lol

Oooooh! I Put it DOWN!

I just got my first assignment back from my writing course from last week. Here is a copy of what the Professor had to say to me:

Hi [Guru] -

Hope you had a nice weekend!

I've graded your 1-3-1 assignment.

Your justification outline was SUPERB. You included a thorough description of your topic as well as your thesis statement. You also clearly stated why you decided to research "Do agile programming methodologies increase performance during large projects?" This is a topic I know nothing about, but am eager to learn more! Only the second perfect submission I've graded. . .very well done!

You earned 25 points.

Not too bad for a class that I hate, huh?

Her remarks on my second paper.
Your final draft comparing/contrasting "Choosing One’s Employment: David or Goliath?" was an improvement on your first draft. There were no grammatical errors and the arguments were all sound. In addition, all research and APA errors were corrected. This was simply a SUPERB submission; virtual pat on the back to you! It's obvious you spent much time on revisions!

You earned 50 points.

She likes the word superb, apparently. Also, I am ashamed to say how much time was spent on revisions. I think she over-estimated that number!

Busy Freakin Weekend

Man, it has been non-stop since Saturday morning with no signs of letting up until tomorrow. Work might be a refuge.

Satruday morning was, of course, cheerleading for my girls, which ties us up from 10am until almost 2pm. Then, we had to get our family picture taken for the church directory. A quick lunch was consumed, then I had to go on a GAP job with the G.

We didn't get home from that until about 9:15pm. I figured I would back the guy's computer up, do the recovery, and then hit the hay. Turns out my youngest was getting sicker by the second and the on-call Dr. with our family practice recommended that we take him to the ER, because his temperature had gone UP after taking medicine, not down.

So, no computer fixing for me. We dropped the girls off with G and Trin and spent from 11:30pm until after 2am at the hospital. Turns out that he is okay and we could have just seriously upped the dosage on the meds. Nice that the on-call guy didn't suggest that. If it was safe, he should have said, "Give him a stronger dose of medicine and let me know if he isn't better in another hour." There was no way we would have given him a stronger dose three hours early without being told. Dag.

So, we got up this morning and I backed up the GAP job guy's computer, restored it, and have been working on homework ever since. Lo had to leave to go to a meeting and will be leaving again to go to choir practice shortly. As soon as she gets home, I have to run back out to the guy's house and give him his computer back and gets my caish.

Man, I thought weekends were for *rest*!

Welcome to Your Dr. McSteamy Headquarters

That's right. According to Google, I am the place for all things McSteamy. I have had over 30 people hit my site from googling McSteamy or some permutation, so I decided to see what was going on. Imagine my surprise when I got back this result:

Look what happens when you Google McSteamy.

The main culprit, judging by the synopsis of my site, was Jemmers' comment on my Desperate Housewives post. So, thanks Jemmers for making me (for now) the expert on all things McSteamy.

At 2/26/2006 12:40 AM, Blogger nicole said...

So you're saying that all I have to do is post the word "McSteamy" somewhere on my blog and I'll have all kinds of new blog readers hitting my site???

Was it always that easy?

Good Deal

Since I'm talking about software today, I'll let you guys in on a purchase I recently made. I bought a $495.00 software program for $5.00 from the manufacturer. They are donating all of the proceeds to the American Red Cross. I don't know how long the explanation of the sale will stay up (ends today), but the link is here.

Basically, they wanted to test social marketing and get people using their product. So far, as of this writing, 2429 people have taken them up on their offer.

Here is their explanation.

Why are We Doing This?

This is a test of the power of social marketing. Blogs and social marketing sites such as Digg and Reddit are becoming more and more popular. We want to know how much of an impact such sites can have on Axosoft's marketing efforts. Therefore, we've designed an irresistible offer that's hard to refuse to see what happens in the blogosphere.

Why $5? Why not just Free?

When we decided to move forward with this offer, we wanted to make it free. However, the Axosoft Online Store currently doesn't have a way to do $0 transactions. All purchases through the store must have a positive dollar value. Rather than spending the time and resources to update the store to allow $0 transactions, we decided to go ahead and charge a nominal fee and donate the money to the Red Cross.
100% of Proceeds Will be Donated to American Red Cross

We're not doing this experiment to make money from selling our software at a 99% discount. Therefore, we will take the $5 fee of each sale and donate it to the American Red Cross to help the victims of the Mudslides in the Philippines and other recent disasters.

A 3-Day Test

This experiment will end on Friday, February 24th.

Progress Update

This page hit the mainstream when Robert Scoble mentioned it last night. Since then, it has taken a life of its own as other bloggers and sites have started mentioning it. They include the Download Squad and even individual bloggers who were impressed by the fact that we plan to donate all the proceeds.

Glad I helped the Red Cross, but even more glad that I got that software for $5.00!

Drat, I missed it. But it sounded like a VERY good cause.

And getting anything for $5? AWESOME!!!

In a Coding Mood

Let me share something with you. It is assumed often that less code will result in faster execution of a program.

Examine the following code written in C#.

for (int i=0; i <10;i++)
mSomeArray[i] = i;

mSomeArray[0] = 0;
mSomeArray[1] = 1;
mSomeArray[2] = 2;
mSomeArray[3] = 3;
mSomeArray[4] = 4;
mSomeArray[5] = 5;
mSomeArray[6] = 6;
mSomeArray[7] = 7;
mSomeArray[8] = 8;
mSomeArray[9] = 9;

Both sets do the same thing. Most every programmer that I know will do the first one. But, the loop (first example) is 2.5 times SLOWER than the explicit declaration (second one) when run. In some languages the equivalent code is 4.5 times slower.

There is always so much to learn.

At 2/24/2006 4:02 PM, Blogger Gooey said...

That actually makes a lot of sense. With the for loop, it's gotta check a lot of extra shit before it can execute the loop. Just declairing them outright gets the program to just do what the hell you want it to do.

I guess the only reason for going with the for loop would be to make the program smaller or something. Damn programming's double edged sword of size versus performance.

At 2/24/2006 5:40 PM, Anonymous eric said...

Yet another reason I switched from programming to design, wait no, I'm just too lazy to be a programmer.

At 2/25/2006 2:01 PM, Blogger nicole said...

Wow, people like you that comprehend stuff like this never cease to impress me!

7 Songs (not seVIIn songs - that is another post)

From Nicole

List seven songs you are into right now, no matter what the genre. Doesn't matter whether they have words or even if they're any good. The only requirement is that they must be songs you're really enjoying right now.

Post these instructions on your blog along with your seven song choices. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.

I won't be tagging anyone else, but if you decide to do this, comment with a link to yours so I can check it out.

First of all, let me say there aren't going to be very many new and sexy songs on here. I have been busy and gotten away from what is new and hip and I only know what I catch quickly on the radio. I need to get back on track. I've been listening to sports talk all day and just recently started taking my MP3 player to work to get back in to some music.

Here we go...

1. Teardrop - Massive Attack (House Theme Song)
2. Gold Digger - Kanye West
3. Beyonce - Check On It
4. Chris Brown - Run It
5. Dem Franchize Boyz - I Think They Like Me (remix)
6. Get'cha Head In The Game - Cast, High School Musical (The cast version, not the B5 version. Yes, this is a Disney movie. But, check the charts. This CD is the most downloaded thing on the internet via paid downloads. Has been for weeks.)
7. Unplugged - Jay-Z (Yes, the whole CD. I will never stop loving this CD. I can't begin to count how many times I've heard it.)

At 2/23/2006 8:36 PM, Blogger nicole said...

Major props on the Massive Attack shout out. But still, I don't get the Beyonce love. It will forever fascinate and amaze me!

Very fun list, Mr. Guru. :)

I just finished watching this week's episode of House. I had to download it since my VCR is crap and I was very excited to get a great copy with the video and audio all synched up.

First of all, tons of fun in this episode. Spoiler type things are coming up, so stop reading if you don't want to hear it.

That girl was a guy? I was saying that at the screen just a few minutes before House told them.

The dad slept with her? Ewww.

House's leg is F'ed up!

The new pain IS in his head.

Any of you out there have thoughts on the episode?

I just love this show!!!

I was shocked....and I loved the girl's/guy's reaction to the whole news...

But look at me!! I am beautiful!!!

And sleeping with your dad to get what you want!!! I find crying does the same thing!! Why get all creepy and weird??? uuuuhhh!

Is it wrong that I find House attractive??? He is just so mean and sarcastic and wrong! Maybe I need to see a doctor!!

What Do I Know?

After yesterday, I was planning on writing a blog today about if there was such a thing as bad luck that I would probably lose my job today.

Yesterday, I was late leaving work, had to rush to band practice, got to practice and the sound board was ruined by the hack Sunday Morning sound tech, I get home and though Lo dutifully taped House - my crap VCR messed the tape up. Then, I was uploading the band's practice CD to the website and the site's FTP server was taking a dump.

Enter today.

I start running late, my shirt was still wet (and still is now, incidentally, I picked the wrong shirt to get dry in 25 mins!), and I left home very late, no time to stop and get something to drink from the store. I could hear the unemployment line calling me...

But, because there is no such thing as bad luck, now things are great. I made record time on the way to work and was actually 7 mins early for my meeting. I found $.65 on my person and bought a Diet Coke from the machine. Someone brought TimBits for the group. Then... the piece de resistance - I was awarded a gift here at work.

The project I am working on awards eligible employees with a $50.00 gift certificate (paid through HR) for completing a Personal Health Assessment online. I am not an eligible employee, but my work was so appreciated that the business bought a $50.00 gift certificate to give to me to show their appreciation.

Amazon Gift Certificate

So, I can download the House episode, the FTP server will eventually work, my shirt will dry, and I still have the Amazon money. I already know how I want to spend it. Bring on the day, baby!

At 2/21/2006 10:35 AM, Blogger Princess21 said...

Yeah for you!!! see...when things start looking down for us....God says "wait....he needs a pick me up!" And makes everything better!! you did not see House!!! I was so looking forward to see what you thought!! I still have a stunned look on my face!!!

Oh....and I think it is super hilarious when someone says "on my person"! Funny stuff!!

Go, George, Go!

Judging by the previews for next week, George really got in there, but unfortunately, the Dith was just using him as a rebound guy. That is really messed up. Give George some love!!!!

Is it just me or is the Bree is a drunk thing on Desperate Housewives boring? I don't like it one bit.

On DH, whose story do you believe, Gabrielle's or her mom's? What do you think the real story is?

Why, oh why do I watch these shows? Why oh why can't they be daily soap operas so at least we don't have to wait so long between episodes?!?

Night Out

I don't have very long to spend on this, but wanted to check in with an update. Lo and I got to go out last night and spend the evening kid free for only the second time in two years.

Sure, we've been out a few times, but what I'm talking about is being totally kid free overnight. We used to get that quite often, but as I said, this was only the second time in the last two years that it has happened. So, thanks to Trin and G for watching the baby and to Lo's dad for watching the two girls.

We had a really good time, that I hope to elaborate on more later. Hope you all are having a great weekend.

Who Should Make the Coffee?

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.

The wife said, "You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee."

The husband said, "You are in charge of the cooking around here so you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee."Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides it says in the Bible that the man should do the coffee."

Husband replies, "I can't believe that! Show me."

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says, "HEBREWS."

At 2/17/2006 8:59 PM, Blogger nicole said...

And not that a joke requires this level of analysis but I don't think that brewing coffee falls into the category of cooking. I mean, I'm sure I could easily learn to brew a mean pot of coffee and I hate to cook. ;)

Big Ups

I got a letter on my desk the other day along with my second internal "Star" award.

Some of the important text from the letter:
Through your efforts, the Medical Center's electronic health record system has been enhanced to include key documents from the Obstetrics prenatal clinic records. This enhancement has improved access to important medical information for clinical decision-making. It also has allowed the active records to be accessed in the clinic, in Labor and Delivery, in the physicians' offices, or wherever information is needed to support patient care.

This integration was a particular challenge, as this product had not previously displayed information from the document imaging system we were using. Your commitment to a solution, and your creativity allowed us to work with the vendor to find an approach that met our needs.

Additionally, I saved them $77,000.00 over letting the vendor deploy their integration solution. They were talking about $80,000.00 and I got it done for a little less than $3,000.00. So, for the moment, I am a popular fellow in some areas.

Total Observation Test

First-year students at Colorado State's Veterinary School were receiving their first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, "In veterinary medicine, it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor:

The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body. For an example, the Professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck it in his mouth.

"Go ahead and do the same thing," he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns sticking a finger in the anal opening of the dead cow and sucking on it.

When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and told them, "The second most important quality is **observation**. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention."

American Idol

Okay, let's get over the fact that my wife and I watched American Idol and didn't go out (lines are long, we have 3 kids, another night is being planned).

Did any of you watch it, tape it, TIVO it, etc? It was crazy tonight. Who else died laughing when they broke out the Brokenote Mountain thing? That was messed up.

Then, the whole thing with the twins. Good grief. The one idiot quit because he thought his brother got kicked off, but didn't. So, he had to go back in and beg back on.

I think the judges just decided that he == ratings. (That is not a typo. == in programming is a comparison operator, = is an assignment operator and I am a geek, so do that math!)

Any of you have some favorite parts?

At 2/15/2006 12:22 PM, Blogger Princess21 said...

I did not watch it until the end. I was surprised that they kept 3 groups out of the 4. I will try to remember to watch it tonight to see who the final 24 are.

At 2/15/2006 12:46 PM, Blogger Gooey said...

Trust me, the only reason they let them back in was because of ratings. To be honest, though, I think they should have at least denied reentry to the one who quit because he thought his brother had been kicked off. He's an idiot, is overly dramatic, and he just needs to shut up. If I'm not mistaken, though, I think both of them are eventually kicked off because, again if I'm not mistaken, they used fake ID's to rent a car to drive to their initial audition in Chicago.

And the whole Brokeback Mountain spoof they did? Totally retarded. I'm getting sick of how many shows and sketch comedians are using that movie as a backbone to their jokes, mainly redoing the trailer, or using the line, "I wish I could quit you."

Which reminds me, I need to see that movie . . . .

At 2/15/2006 11:41 PM, Blogger nicole said...

Wow, had I any idea that you were gonna review AI then I would have made sure to try and answer this post AGES ago.

I think the writers are getting a little mor ambitious this year and so far it's paying off. But now that we're at the actual voting stage of the competition I fear we're not going to see much more of that wit until next season.

Suck Up?

Okay, here is what I did. My boss was a math major in school and he is a big fan of Pi. No that isn't a typo, he likes the number - you know 3.14159265...... He has a Pi tie pin and other assorted Pi knick knacks.

He has hooked me up with free or seriously reduced tickets to OSU Football, Basketball, and Hockey. I wanted to pay him back, so I got him this shirt.
Think Geek Pi Shirt

Not only is there a large Pi symbol on the shirt, it is made up of almost 4500 digits of Pi. Very geek chic.

I gave it to him a few weeks ago and he really liked it. I didn't do it to earn more favor with him (and actually gave it to him in secret so no one would think that), I just told him that I was thanking him for all of the tickets that he hooked me up with.

That doesn't make me a world class suckup, does it?

Grey's Anatomy

Okay, so I just finished watching the episode. A few thoughts.

  • I'm glad that Bailey's hubby didn't die.

  • Bailey cracked me up when she called it her "Va-jay-jay".

  • Right before that guy blew up, Lo and I said, "Watch that guy get blown up." Then he did.

  • Bailey named her kid's middle name after George.

  • I just read on a spoiler site that Mark (who cheated with Mrs McDreamy) would be on and it looks like he starts next week.

  • That makes an interesting rooting environment. Most people want Meredith and Derek together, so they might root for Mark to take Addison away. Also, some want George and Meredith. Who to root for?

  • I liked how tonight's episode acutally had a scene at the end with George seeing all three girls in the shower. Different context, though. Very good moment.

  • Glad that Christina Ricci's character got some redemption.

  • Glad guy with bomb in chest didn't die.

  • Derek and Preston finally got to use first names.

I'm sure I'll think about more later. Just wanted to get my initial reactions down.

At 2/13/2006 11:03 AM, Blogger Gooey said...

I was completely shocked when the bomb went off; definately did not see that comming.

I also liked the irony of the ending, with George seeing all three of them giving Meradith a shower after she witnessed the explosion in the hallway.

And is it just me, or might there be a romantic story arc between George and Hannah the EMC? Seemed like there was some chemistry between the two when he was taking care of her.

Overall, good episode. I came in half-way through (ran to Kroger after Desperate Housewives), but enjoyed what I saw.

I thought it was a great show. I am still sad the bomb guys blew up!! Hubby and I just sat there completely stunned. I thought something would happen....but wow!

I did not like the end where Dr. McDreamy came to visit her and said, "Glad you did not die today!" LAME!!! I guess I did not see what he was trying to accomplish there. But I do hope they can get together soon. I am not a fan of his wife...or the way she yelled at George! I love George!!

Great show!!

At 2/15/2006 11:39 PM, Blogger nicole said...

First off, I adore the term "va-jay-jay."

Second, I love George -- really I do. But I just don't see him and the Dith together. She's just not his scene.

I'm sorry... Did you call Meredith, "the Dith"?

That is awesome!

It's Not Like I'm Complaining...

... but I am.

I do the CD and DVD duplication for our church. No big deal. I took it over on purpose from someone else who wasn't keeping up with it. It was taking him two weeks to fill requests and when I took over, he had a two month backlog. So, I took over and have done a one week turnaround ever since.

Some stuff is starting to wear on me, though. For one, people don't get the slips back to the drop-off point until Thursday evening sometimes. That makes it very difficult for me to maintain my turnaround. I could just let it go, but I don't want the perception out there that I don't have it together and that I am just like my predecessor.

The second thing that is wearing on me is the volume that some people request. I just filled an order for a guy for the last 6 weeks of sermons on DVD, TWO COPIES EACH. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Many people do that sort of thing. First of all, the DVDs aren't that riveting. If you had wanted to share, you could watch it once for yourself, then pass your copy on. I'm sure there are just DVDs as coasters all over Central Ohio.

My solution is to still offer CDs for free, but charge $1.00 for the DVDs. It is just a small amount of money, but still would keep the people who just play around from doing so. If that guy had to shell out $12.00, I don't think he would keep going at it, hitting me with these kinds of requests every so often.

It's not like I'm complaining... but I am.

At 2/12/2006 1:34 AM, Blogger Trinity13 said...

Why not have it available online?

At 2/12/2006 2:26 PM, Blogger Guru said...

Bandwidth. A video of the sermon is 3 gigabytes large. Not only would we need storage of that, we'd need the transfer bandwidth.

The church's site has no official limit on bandwidth, though if you use more than 2 gigs of transfer, they will want to re-evaluate the contract.

So, if one sermon is downloaded in video format, we bust the bandwidth.

I wish we could, though.

At 2/12/2006 5:54 PM, Blogger Gooey said...

My dad had these exact same complaints when he did all of that.

My advice: put a damn "Must be in by [INSERT DAY HERE]" disclaimer on it. If they don't get it in by then, tee ess. That way when someone complains that they didn't get their DVD's and asks why, you can point to the disclaimer.

Charging them for the DVD's was another idea.

A cheaper solution: podcast the audio.

10 Things You Never Hear in Church

1. Hey! It's my turn to sit in the front pew!

2. I was so enthralled, I never noticed your sermon went 25 minutes over time.

3. Personally I find witnessing much more enjoyable than golf.

4. I've decided to give our church the $500 a month I used to send to TV evangelists.

5. I volunteer to be the permanent teacher for the Junior High Sunday School class.

6. Forget the denominational minimum salary. Let's pay our pastor so he can live like we do. (Note: This one is said in our church. They are CONSTANTLY voting the guy pay raises while decreasing his responsibilities.)

7. I love it when we sing hymns I've never heard before!

8. Since we're all here, let's start the service early.

9. Pastor, we'd like to send you to this Bible seminar in the Bahamas.

10. Nothing inspires me and strengthens my commitment like our annual stewardship campaign!

Love This Book

My friend Chad recommended a book to me a while ago and I got it from the library and read it - three times. It was absolutely amazing. The title is a mouthful, but don't let that silliness fool you, it is very good reading.

It is called Joel on Software: And on Diverse and Occasionally Related Matters That Will Prove of Interest to Software Developers, Designers, and Managers, and to Those Who, Whether by Good Fortune or Ill Luck, Work with Them in Some Capacity
Joel on Software

I can't say enough about this book. It is written by Joel Spolsky, and is a collection of things that mostly are available on his website Don't let that deter you, however. In this book, they are organized in a super coherent way and it really gives his essays fresh life.

Many of you may not be programmers out there, but those of you who are or are interested in it, I highly recommend this book. It just might change the way that you think about some development.

I think so much of Mr. Spolsky now that I have this book coming from the library and I bought this book because he wrote the forward and recommended it highly on his site. (BTW, I love the latter book, and will probably write about it another time.)

That's all for now. I just wanted to share a bit about two of the joys of my life (Reading and programming - together! Move over chocolate and peanut butter!). Have a good night.

Holy cow, my younger daughter is six. I can remember when my oldest was born and now her younger sister is six years old. I wouldn't say that I'm old (I'm 28), but time sure is flying.

You can see some adorable pictures of her (and me!) on my wife's blog. They are coming to see me at lunch today (my daughter loves doing that) and she gets to pick the restaurant. I can imagine it will be whatever place has the best toys in their kids meal! We'll see if there is a nicer place around here that she might want, but I won't be surprised if we go visit the king or the clown.

Happy Birthday to my Boogernose!

Yeah. She is boogernose and my oldest is frecklenose.

I call her boogernose because (especially as a baby) she used to wake up with a TON of crusted boogers on her nose.

Now, while she doesn't wake up that way, she does get some nice solid booger formations in her nose when she is sick. I enjoy cleaning it out. Odd, I know.

I'm thinking you now wish that wasn't in the form of a question!

Grey's Anatomy

Show of hands... How many of you watched Grey's Anatomy when it aired? How many taped it and watched it later?

I was in the "Watched it when it aired" camp. I was not disappointed. An estimated 38.1 million people watched it, the highest ratings for a scripted show since the Friends finale. Did you like the shower scene? (I did!) The creator of the show said, "I knew it was the Super Bowl, people, I knew a little girl-on-girl would be good with the Super Bowl boys and maybe keep them watching. I'm not stupid." Judging by the numbers, she was not at all stupid.

Besides that, though, it was a good show. Freaking cliffhangers, though! I imagine they did that though so that new viewers would go back and watch the rest of the show at the regular time and start doing that more often. Not a bad plan, but it is driving me crazy to see the rest. My weekend will be ruined because I will be looking forward to Sunday night and the rest will fly by and I won't enjoy it. BLAST!

For those of you who missed the episode, it will be rerun Thursday night 9:30-10:30 EST. Just so you know.

Thoughts on the episode? Did anyone else think that Dr. Milton was a major jerkwad for walking out on the girl? What about Bailey's hubby? Will he be all right?

I know some spoilers about what might be coming in the storyline, too, and it is going to get mad crazy. Here is just one tidbit. Remember Mark, who Mrs. McDreamy cheated with? That's right, he's showing up. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments if you are so inclined.

I completely agree that he was a total dick for leaving her there. I hope his ass is fired. I was standing in the living room with my mom for the opening scene, and my mom was wide-eyed/mouthed and saying, "nuh-uh," through the entire scene until we found out it was George's fantasy.

I'm just stoked that football is now over, and House can get back to a regular schedule.

At 2/08/2006 2:33 PM, Blogger Trinity13 said...

I'm just glad that it's a new episode next week...I hate having to wait months or even weeks to find out what happened.

At 2/08/2006 4:31 PM, Blogger Guru said...

Gooey: House was off schedule because of the 2hr American Idol shows on Tuesdays. Now that AI is back to 1 hour shows is the reason we get House back. (Which I am wikid happy about!)

Trin: I hated that one ST: TNG when Picard became a borg and we had to wait like 5 months to see how that turned out. Drove me nuts!

At 2/08/2006 11:55 PM, Blogger nicole said...

It's amazing to me how many Grey's viewers are coming out of the woodwork just from this one airing. I had no idea so many people loved the series (besides me)!

I'm thinking Dr. "Pansy" Milton should get fired...out of a canon. That's probably the fastest I've gone from zero to hate in TV history.

But it's a great show. I'm so glad I committed to it during the pilot episode. :)

Don't be deceived. I've been watching Grey's Anatomy since the first episode, as well.

In fact, I've even posted about it several other times, the earliest being a mention of it here in May.

At 2/09/2006 9:59 PM, Blogger nicole said...

Well, as long as you're watching it now, that's all that really matters, right? :)

I'm so glad I'm not the only fan! I used to call it my guilty pleasure!

I got my dh hooked on the epi after the superbowl. Thank goodness I tacked an extra 30 minutes onto Tivo so I could get it all. Great Episode!

Dr. Milton. Yeah, he's a schmuck. I tried to imagine what I would do if I was faced with his situation. I can't say I would do the same.

Final Thoughts

Okay, I know I've been going on about the Super Bowl for a few days now, but these are my final thoughts and then later today, I'll post about something else.

Neat Facts

  • The Super Bowl was held on the 36th day of the year. Jerome Bettis' number? 36. Ooh.

  • Ben is the youngest QB ever to win a Super Bowl. He is also the QB with the lowest QB rating in the game to win.

  • Willie Parker's 75 yard run was the longest in Super Bowl history. Yea!

  • Kelly Herndon's 76 yard interception return for Seattle was the longest in Super Bowl history. D'oh!

  • The game was watched in an average of 45.85 million homes, the second-highest total in television history behind the final episode of MASH in 1983. (The whole average thing is tricky. As many as 141 million people turned in at any one time, which isn't even the highest Super Bowl number, but the average (people stayed to watch) was the 2nd highest in history. That number means much more to advertisers.)

I still can't believe that the Steelers did it. It is such a great feeling. I just need to go out now and spend my $$$ on some gear!

Oh, The Joy

Well, as most of the civilized world knows, my Steelers won the game. In my estimation, the play of the game...
Antwaan Randle El Play of the Game

Things that may make me a sore winner:
1) Ben broke the plane in the air with the ball.
2) Jackson did push off in the end zone.

I just wanted to make my stand on those matters clear.

Here is the official Guru Game Face. I am wearing eye black and a Steelers AFC Champion t-shirt. I took this myself with my phone.

It was so awesome being around all of those Steeler Fans (14 at least) and being in a town so Steeler Crazy! The celebration was incredible. Look, I even got a "Black and Gold" soft serve ice cream cone!

Heading Out

Well, I am off to Pennsylvania to go cheer the Steelers with a bunch of rabid Steeler fans in a suburb of Pittsburgh. My uncle has a large hi-def TV, so we are going to watch the game in style.

I have all of these fantasies of how excited I will be when the Steelers win and how much of a hero that Ben, Jerome, Hines, Joey, Troy, and all the guys are going to be. I don't even want to think of how it will be if the team loses.

Very, very sad, I'll tell you that. A great thing about going is that people there are going to care way too much about the Steelers, but that could turn to a bad thing in a hurry if we don't get it done.

Can't even think about that. Just need to stay positive and cheer the team on to "One for the Thumb"!

Super Bowl

I have been waiting to make this post. I can't bear to think about the game, I am almost a nervous wreck. I just can't wait. I really hope that we blow them out so that I can actually enjoy the game.

Here are some facts about my Steelers and this game:

1. Ben Roethlisberger is the 2nd youngest QB to start the Super Bowl. If he wins, he will be the youngest to win it.

2. The Steelers have beaten the 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the AFC and if they beat the #1 seeded Seahawks, they will truly BE the best by having BEATEN the best.

3. The Steelers are only the second team to win 3 road games to get to the Super Bowl. The first was New England after the '85 season. I hope we don't suffer their fate. They got killed by Da Bears.

While you are waiting for the game (and to root for my Steelers), listen to this tune to get you amped up for the game.

My man Chad sent me this story about a guy that we used to work with. Chad's story goes like this:

I'll tell you what's funny. This guy is doubting this tenth planet thing because PI is a divine number shown by 3.14159 where as the earth is the 3rd planet, and the solar system has 1 sun, 4 planets, 1 asteroid belt then 5 planets, for a total of nine planets.

So, either PI is 3.141610...

or, this planet is not a planet...

or this guy is a dumba$$.

That guy has a lot of weird ideas and is very vocal about them. He definitely can give Christians a bad name.

Beauty Suffering From Inflation?

Call me a nerd. I don't care. But, that Wendy's commercial bugs me. You know the one. The guy tells his wife that she looks like 1,000,000 crispy chicken nuggets.

If I was the wife, I'd be insulted. That is only $990,000.00. If I were her, I'd be like, "Where is the other $10,000.00? Am I not good enough for that?"

Those damn Sony PSP commercials bug the hell out of me. You know, the ones which feature critters like squirrels, one of which wants to play, but the other one can't because he's playing, "Nut," to which the other squirrel exclaims, "but there's portable nut now, yeah, it's a nut you can play outside!" Then some guys voce says, "PSP: it's like a nut . . . you can play with outside."

So actually, he didn't even say she looked like a million 5 piece crispy chicken nuggets, he just said a million nuggets, so in reality, is he telling her she looks like $198,000? Now, that's insulting!
